Author Statement

I chose to write a dedicated climbing guide to Dumbarton Rock in order to spread my own personal knowledge of the area to anyone interested in climbing there and in the hope that by doing so I could help people enjoy their time climbing a little better.

I have been climbing at the rock since 1994 and my time spent there has given me my best and most varied climbing experiences, as well as the enjoyment of meeting and climbing with the many people who use the crag. By 1998 I knew the rock and its climbs very well and writing a guide specifically for the rock was an obvious idea. However a few others were considering doing the same and, with no experience in writing, I left the idea. By summer 2000 there was still no guide and the climbing and new routing scene at the rock was more intense than ever so I decided to do it.

When I first told people that I had written the guide and that it would be published on the Internet I had a mixed response. A guide-book you can carry around the boulders to find your next problem is clearly an essential. Had I published the guide as a book, it would be severely limited in space and would certainly have no topos or photos, as well as being another expensive item of climbing gear that only local climbers would ever buy. On the Web, you can be inspired by numerous colour photos (and videos!) of the climbing, then print off the full, complete descriptions and topos free, staple them up and get out there!

On the boulders alone there are about 50 more problems than in the last guide, so there is no shortage of challenges! Nobody has yet ticked all the problems and this remains a considerable challenge for the normal, well-adjusted individual, but there are persons unnamed with less than five to go!

Finally, if there are any new problems (or good photos) to report, or I have missed, then get in touch and I will get them included. See you out there!
