The wonderful
area that is Glenelg and Knoydart is penetrated by Loch Hourn, from the
north shore of which Beinn Sgritheall rises. Its name probably means scree
hill, and indeed there are vast areas of scree overlooking the loch. Fortunately
these are avoided on the walk.
The remote
village of Arnisdale may be the starting or finishing point for the walk.
Here we will elect to describe a clockwise traverse, so begin about 2.5
km west of Arnisdale, at Creag Ruadh (822 119). Take to open woods north-west
at first, picking up a path which leads to a small lochan on the level
section of the west ridge.
Continue
east along the west ridge of Beinn Sgritheall which leads soon enough
to the summit. Views to the south over Loch Hourn encompass the fine peaks
of Knoydart; Ladhar Bheinn, Meall Buidhe, Luinne Bheinn. To the west is
Rum and Eigg. The mountain itself has fine ridges and coires to the north,
not readily seen until on the hill. The continuation of the traverse eastward
takes in the east top at 900m. From here steep and stony slopes lead down
to the Bealach Arnasdail.
From the
Bealach Arnasdail, turn south-west to descend steeply parallel to the
burn. Head for the west end of the village and so gain the road just west
of the bridge over the burn.
