A solitary
Munro lying a few kilometres west of the Tarmachans and gained from Killin.
From the village drive up the narrow Glen Lochay road to just west of
Duncroisk. There is room for a few cars just past the bridge over the
Allt Dhuin Croisg (526 363).
Enter the
field on the west side of the burn. There is an information box at the
gate, as this is a shooting estate. During the stalking season check the
Mountaineering Council of Scotland website www.mountaineering-scotland.org.uk
for an up to date telephone number. Continue up the field, which can be
very muddy and rutted. Just above are the remains of what must have been
quite an extensive village; now only walls remain.
In mist,
the broad shoulder of the southeast ridge of Meall Ghaordaidh is easy
to wander over. It is approached from an old sheep fank at just over 400m
height. The ridge is easily followed, with hopefully views across to the
Tarmachans to the east and the Crianlarich hills gradually appearing to
the west. Take a careful look at some of the large rocks, as the schistose
rock here often contains garnets. This semi-precious stone is recognised
as dull, reddish-brown lumps on the smoother schist surfaces.
Below the
summit steepening, craggy ground appears. The going is slightly easier
on the left, particularly in icy conditions, as many icy patches may be
formed in short but steep steps. The summit eventually heaves into view,
with a handy drystane wall encircling the trig point. The photo is from
the summit, and shows Ben Vorlich and Stuc a'Chroin, almost 24 kilometres
away to the SSE. Return by the same route.
