This walk
incorporates two of the ten Munros found in the Mamore Ridge group of
mountains. They are easily accessed from Glen Nevis and provide superb
walking on the big scale with a suitably panoramic vista in all directions.
Begin at
the Achriabhach car park in Glen Nevis (146 683). A path starting at a
gate opposite the cottages leads to a forest walk, the first section of
which goes to meet a road at a hairpin bend. Take the upper road northwest
for about 700m to the start of a path on the left and take this path through
the forest.
A stile
leads to the now open hillside, following a fence southeast to gain the
northeast ridge of Mullach nan Coirean and a better path. The easy-angled
ridge leads in 2.5 km to the summit, with a stirring view over Glen Nevis
to The Ben. The next section of the walk heads for the second Munro of
the day, Stob Ban (white peak). On certain mornings, I'm not the only
one to have thought that a thin coating of snow had appeared overnight,
so white are the quartzite screes high up this fine peak.
Drop down
southeast via easy slopes, skirting the rim of the coire, and take a gently
undulating ridge southeast over the SE top of Mullach nan Coirean (917m).
The ridge firms up and continues northeast, taking in a minor top before
dropping east to the col at 846m. Here you cannot but fail to note the
change in rock type, from red to grey, granite to quartzite. Continue
east then more steeply southeast amongst the sharp-edged quartzite rocks
to gain the summit of Stob Ban (999m, 147 654).
To go down
to Glen Nevis and the starting point, take the narrow east ridge, gaining
grassy slopes and descending to find a good stalker's path near the col
at the head of Coire a'Mhusgain. Take this path and its north branch,
into the coire on the east side of the burn and so back to Achriabhach.
