It is easy
to overlook the Border hills of Scotland and England, particularly when
tempted by the highlands to the north of the Midland valley, but head
south for a change and be prepared for pleasant walking over grassy slopes.
The Lowther Hills, as a taster, lie just east of the historic lead-mining
region around the village of Wanlockhead, which is the starting point
of this walk.
The Southern
Upland Way (SUW) runs through the village, and is followed for part of
the walk, beginning from the road above the Visitor Centre in Wanlockhead.
Somewhat bizarrely, part of this walk is on tarmac but as you will find
it is nonetheless pleasant walking.
Take the
road up the SUW as far as point NS 883 115. Here, the Enterkin Pass path
continues south from a bend in the SUW. Take this path to the col at the
head of the pass then continue southwest to reach the summit of East Mount
Lowther, where a summit indicator points out the interesting panorama.
Go back down
over the col and up again to Lowther Hill, whose summit is defended by
a fence surrounding the radar installation. Given the current state of
world politics, it may be better not to attempt a summit visit here! A
clockwise detour following the fence leads to the continuation of the
road, which is taken to Green Lowther and more radar domes (732m, 901
121).
Return to
Lowther Hill then back to Wanlockhead following the SUW.
