It's easy
to hear the magic word Torridon and think only of the giant Munros peaks
in that glen but there are other, equally enjoyable hills at a slightly
lower level, including the two Corbetts described here. For some, they
could also serve as an introduction to the glen.
If you start
at the Glas Leitir car park by Loch Maree, you can also enjoy a surprise
bonus, as here begins the Mountain Trail built and provided as part of
the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve. Take the trail SE to reach a
large viewpoint cairn, then continue SW to the Allt Toll a' Ghiubhais.
Follow this burn uphill, with Ruadh-stac Beag on your right and Beinn
Eighe's main ridge on your left.
Continue
to follow the burn under the bristling eastern flanks of Ruadh-stac Beag
until it is possible to turn west and so gain the south ridge of the hill.
The way is clear to the top, with some scree needing care.
Retrace your
steps, following the burn downhill until it is possible to head north
and so gain the summit plateau of Meall a' Ghiubhais by the SE ridge.
The SW top is the higher of two. In descent, take a more east-south-east
line and pick up the NW Mountain Trail, which leads easily back to the
car park.
Should the
Mountain Trail be inundated with chattering visitors, there is an alternative
route, taking the Pony Track about 1 km NW of Kinlochewe. This takes a
generally western approach to gain the route between the two Corbetts.
Climb Ruadh-stac Beag then Meall a' Ghiubhais as described above, to return
by the Pony Track. The routes are about 15 and 17 km respectively.
