Peterhead Community Centre Climbing Wall

Opened: 1978
|
A relic from the past! This wall, located in the town's busy Community Centre is built from local Peterhead granite.
Large blocks cemented in place give rise to a wall that stands proud at the far end of a sports hall.
At one time it would've been state of the art, but despite its good looks, it offers little for the more experienced climber. To a novice however, the wall offers much fun and the features will provide a useful learning experience.

Overall verdict:
|
|
A bit outdated but nonetheless a good wall for the beginner and those wishing to practice natural gear placements.
|
| How to get there:
|
By bus: A regular bus service runs from Aberdeen to Peterhead daily.
By train:
By car: Coming in on the A90 (Aberdeen -Peterhead), go straight over at the first roundabout on reaching Peterhead (signed Harbour Traffic). This takes you into King St. Turn 1st left at traffic lights into Queen St and you'll see the Community Centre on the left (opposite Safeway).

Wall Description:
|
Top-rope walls
This imposing wall is made from local Peterhead granite. Large blocks of rock have been cemented into place to create a structure approximately 25 feet in height. The wall features a tunnel, (looks like a tight squeeze!), belay ledges, (for practising belay techniques or manteling), chimneys, (for back & foot technique), a pillar, slab, vertical walls and slightly overhanging walls, a fist crack, corner crack and arete. The gaps left between the granite blocks give handholds of varying sizes and irregularity.
A top rope pulley system is in place and I assume you have to lead the routes (solo or on natural gear) to get these into position.
Easiest route: No set routes
Hardest problem: No set routes
Classic of the crag: It has to be the squeeze through the tunnel!

Opening Hours:
|
|
Because of its location within the Community Centre and the sports hall, school groups have priority for both the use of the wall and the use of the hall for other activities. It is therefore advisable to check with reception on availability.
