| Description: |
Roger has been climbing for some 35 years and is a well-known figure in both the Scottish summer and winter climbing scene.
He was involved in the initial development of Aonach Mor as a winter climbing ground, and has climbed many new routes across the country, including Salmonella (VII,8) on Aonach Beag and The Screaming (VIII,8) on Beinn An Dothaidh.
In summer, he prefers to "follow in the footsteps of those who discover and develop new crags". Before his recent injury, sustained in a bad fall after tripping from a ledge at the top of Bowden Doors, Roger was still climbing to a very respectable level on rock, onsighting E5, redpointing 7c+ and keeping pace with the youngsters at the local wall.
Away from Scotland he has made first ascents of several 6000m peaks in the Himalayas, climbed many of the classic 'grandes courses' in the Alps and a number of big wall climbs such as the Swedish Route on the Troll Wall.
By acting as series editor to the first complete set of SMC comprehensive guidebooks for summer and winter climbing throughout the whole of Scotland, Roger has made a significant contribution to Scottish climbing. |
| Finest Moment: |
"An ascent of The Fish, a very long and hard route on the South Face of the Marmolada in the Dolomites. It has no bolts and pitches up to E6 if climbed totally free - we didn't, but we still had to pull out the climb of our lives." |
