| Description: |
Neil started climbing in the late 1970's with the Stirling team and served an apprenticeship with the late Ian Duckworth. He studied in Aberdeen from 1978 but it wasn't until 1983 that he moved there permanently.
Neil is probably best known for his early repeats of many top standard rock climbs in the north east and Cairngorms. A keen all-rounder, with a reputation for being quite bold, he enjoys mountain traditional, cragging, sport, bouldering and some winter climbing.
Although not particularly driven by first ascents he has produced a steady trickle over the years at venues ranging from Glen Lednock, Limekilns, Reiff, Ben Udlaidh, the North East and the Cairngorms.
In more recent years he has continued to add some excellent routes including; Naked (E4) at the Dubh Loch; Salmon Chanted Evening (E2) at Longhaven; Old Fashioned Waltz (E4) at Rosehearty and Gift Horse (E4) at Tarlair. He has also partnered Moir on some top class E6's in the Cairngorms like The Shetlander and Steep Frowning Glories.
Together with Neil Shepherd he was responsible for co-organising the highly successful Vango Scottish Indoor Bouldering League which not only provided great competitions but also helped to bring the Scottish climbing community together. In the mid 90's he courted controversy in the north east with the development of two sport climbing venues around Aberdeen. |
