Looking back over the last three decades, Rab's name has always been associated with the cutting edge and development of Scottish climbing, both in summer and winter. His motivation for new routing, be it winter lines, traditional rock routes or sport climbs, has always been there. Over the years, he has left hundreds of routes in his wake, many of which have now become modern-day test pieces. Winter first ascents include: Neanderthal (VII,7), Inclination (VII,8) and Fall Out (VII,7) in Glen Coe (the latter remains unrepeated); Deep Throat (V,6) on Coire an Lochain, Cairngorms, Deadmans Groove (VII,7),the Cobbler and West Buttress Directissima (VII,7), Beinn Eighe.
In summer, Rab has played a major part in the development of areas such as Stac Pollaidh, Ardmair, Seana Mheallan, Glen Coe, Garbh Beinn, Lewis and Ardnamurchan. He was also a key activist behind the development of many sport-climbing venues such as Glen Ogle and Strathyre. It didn't stop there however, his name can be seen against many new lines in El Chorro in southern Spain, and in Mallorca. Recently, his attention has turned to the Gairloch and Gruinard crags where he has added numerous outstanding lines such as Major Domo, Dead Calm, Balding Oldie, Old El Pastits and this years Summer Breeze - all E6.
Recently he partnered Cubby on the Duel (IX,8/9) in Glen Coe, proof that he certainly isn't "Pastit" - his drive and determination are still with him, and thirty years on, is still at the forefront of Scottish mountaineering. |
